Tacoma Celebrating Womxn's Day with Womxn in Music
Tacoma creates an all-womxn produced event for Womxn's Day to support Womxn in Music with Thunderpussy, Whitney Mongé, Stephanie Anne Johnson, and more.
[PRposts, Thu Feb 21 2019] Did you know that women performers make up 21.7% of all musical artists? Even more alarming, are the statistics of songwriters (12.3%) and producers (2.1%) in the music industry. These statistics are included in the most recent data collected by The Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, a global think tank dedicated to studying inclusion and parity among entertainment industries.
International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8, is a global celebration of women’s achievements. With this year’s theme, “Balance for Better,” a couple of Tacoma natives have created an all-ages event to celebrate the regional musical talents of the Pacific Northwest, along with other women and non-binary professionals in all the mediums involved in the production of the show: photography, videography, graphic design, and show production.
Jordani Sarreal (artist, producer, and founder of Mt. Martre - a production company dedicated to promoting women and nonbinary artists in music), first thought of the event’s concept as a reversed “Day Without a Woman” that was celebrated on Women’s Day 2017. She wanted to create an evening that showcased local and regional womxn in music, local womxn-owned businesses, and nonprofits serving womxn in our communities (YWCA, Planned Parenthood, and Rain City Rock Camp for Girls). Bringing on Katie Lowery of The Warehouse, the duo has created a femme-powered line-up to Alma Mater’s Fawcett Hall: Thunderpussy, Whitney Mongé, Stephanie Anne Johnson, and more.
In addition to the live event, a compilation album of PNW Womxn in Music is being released and debuted at the show, with all pre-sale ticket purchases receiving a copy. The show is sponsored by Mt. Martre, Tacoma Music Organization, The Rainbow Centre, and The Mule Tavern.
